Dialog Translations was founded in Oldenburg in December 1991 by Hans Christian von Steuber. After graduating from Altes Gymnasium Oldenburg in 1981, Hans studied translation in Hildesheim, including a semester at the University of Manchester. He then spent a year at the Graduate School of Linguistics https://liberalarts.utexas.edu/linguistics/ in Austin, Texas under the Fulbright program. Upon returning from the U.S., he completed his degree in Spanish and joined translator cooperative InTra as a terminologist. In 1990, Hans became a certified translator/interpreter for English, French, and Spanish, and certified translations are still a major line of business for us today. After humble beginnings in a small office, the company moved in 1998 into its own fully glazed new building with just under 60 square meters of office space and four workstations. Over the years, the infrastructure grew and was expanded to include a mirrored Dell PowerEdge server and several Macs and PCs, and networked with gigabit cabling. Today, we are able to cover a wide range of language combinations and specialist fields thanks to our extensive team of technically skilled translators and interpreters. Our focus is on IT, telecommunications and renewable energies, with particular emphasis on offshore wind power. We handle a wide range of documents - certificates, agreements, specifications, technical documentation, advertising, websites. We love writing polished marketing copy with an advertising twist, but precise, clear legalese is also one of our strengths. We are also happy to polish our clients’ material - no one reads a text as carefully as a translator.
We not only translate texts that deal with sustainable issues such as renewable energies, we also attach great importance to minimising our carbon footprint. Thats why we use energy-saving devices and print on recycled paper, and our espresso machine is fed with organic beans. Our electricity comes from solar panels on the roof and from Green Planet Energy, and the water we use comes from a cistern.
Born in 1962, Hans studied both applied and theoretical linguistics and technology in Hildesheim, Manchester (England) and Austin (Texas) as a Fulbright Scholar. In 1989, he received his technical translator degree from the University of Hildesheim for the languages English, French, and Spanish with electrical engineering/mechanical engineering as his focus subjects. In his thesis, he examined the first PC-based translation system available on the market, Weidner, which had been purchased by the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology. After working for two and a half years as a terminologist and translator for translators’ cooperative InTra eG in Berlin, he started Dialog Translations in Oldenburg in 1991. He served several years as a member of the board of his regional association of the BDÜ, the largest German association of translators and interpreters. In his private life, he is an enthusiastic triathlete and choir singer and writes poetry. He also enjoys traveling and has a weakness for good restaurants. Spicy Asian cuisine is just as much his thing as refined regional cuisine from Germany.
